Hiking Route 1: Hehuan Main Peak Trail

High-altitude Trail. Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆

One-way distance approximately 1.8 kilometers / Altitude: 3,186 to 3,417 meters / Surface: Cement road / Round trip takes about 2 hours.

The main peak of Hehuan Mountain, with an elevation of 3,417 meters, is the boundary mountain on the west side of Taroko National Park. It serves as the watershed between the Liwu River and the Zhuoshui River. Standing at the summit, the winding paths of the Liwu River and Zhuoshui River diverge on the east and west sides, respectively. The Liwu River flows eastward into the Pacific Ocean, while the Zhuoshui River meanders through the mountains, passing through the Puli Basin and Changhua Plain, before finally entering the Taiwan Strait. Looking around, besides the visible peaks of Hehuan, nearby ranges including the Qilai Main Peak, Nenggao Mountain, Nanhu Da Shan, Zhongyuan Jian Shan, and even Yushan can be seen. The area near the triangulation point on the main peak is the most concentrated habitat for the Yushan Rhododendron population.

Hiking Route 2: East Peak Trail of Hehuan Mountain

Mountain TrailDifficulty: ★★★☆☆

One-way Distance: Approximately 1.1 kilometers / Elevation: 3,100 to 3,421 meters / Trail Conditions: Stone steps, mountain paths, wooden walkways / Round Trip: Approximately 2.5 hours

The East Peak of Hehuan Mountain is the second-highest peak in the Hehuan Mountain Range, standing at an elevation of 3,421 meters and ranked as the 35th peak among the Baiyue (Top 100 Peaks). The trailhead is located near the Hehuan Mountain Visitor Center at kilometer 33 of Provincial Highway 14A. The trail is 1.1 kilometers long and relatively steep. Due to its high altitude, the scenery varies throughout the four seasons, with blooming wildflowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, a desolate beauty in autumn, and a snow-covered landscape in winter. Along the trail is the most concentrated area of the Yushan Rhododendron population. In May and June, the mountain is adorned with a sea of peach-red flowers.

Hiking Route 3: Shimen Mountain Trail

Mountain Trail.Difficulty: ★★★☆☆

One-way Distance: Approximately 1.1 kilometers / Elevation: 3,100 to 3,421 meters / Trail Conditions: Stone steps, mountain paths, wooden walkways / Round Trip: Approximately 2.5 hours

Shimen Mountain, with an elevation of 3,237 meters, is one of Taiwan's Baiyue. The trail is 784 meters long, and it takes only half an hour from the trailhead to the summit, making it the easiest peak to climb among the Hehuan Mountain Range. In the past, climbing Shimen Mountain took 8 days before the opening of the Wushe Branch of the Central Cross-Island Highway. The current route is incomparable. Along the way, the vast grassland offers a panoramic view, effortlessly capturing the Qilai Range, Nanhu Da Shan, and the entire Hehuan Mountain Range. It can be said to be the most approachable Baiyue (Top 100 Peaks) in Taiwan.
